I'm wondering if it creates too many polygons for gaming? I've seen some pretty interesting landscapes created with it.

It appears to have that for import (with 3d import module $129), but I can't find it for export.

Vue 8 Pioneer free (See bottom of page for formats)

Module for Vue 8 - Exporter module has other 3D formats ($150)

I see what you are getting at with the raw question, but what I am interested in is the possibilities for cliffs, overhangs and caves in Vue 8.

An artist guy is offering video tutorials that show how to do them, however as Vue is 500MB, I thought I'd ask before I download it. He also said you need some of Vue's paid modules to follow the more advanced sections, but I don't know which.

The reason I asked, is I know Vue have a make trees/plants module, but I read a years old comment, that said the objects produced had polys that are too high for games. So I wondered if the same might be true for Vue terrains.

You could load the terrain as a mesh. It wouldn't be a Leadwerks Engine terrain, but the engine is flexible enough it wouldn't matter.

I use L3DT to make my heightmaps.

I hadn't heard of L3DT before, so thanks for that, I'll take a look at it. I used something similar in the past called GeoControl 1, but I didn't update it to GeoControl 2, which looks a lot nicer than GC1.
